What Seniors Should Keep in Mind When Becoming a Tax Preparer?

By: Jamie Waggoner

Becoming a professional tax preparer can be a wonderful career choice for people over age 65.

In fact, a recent study by Time Magazine showed that 1 in 7 tax preparers is a senior.

However, there are also some things you should keep in mind when you're an experienced and seasoned person getting into the field of tax preparation.

This brief article is intended to help seniors choose the best tax preparer fit for you.

Type of tax business

When considering becoming a tax preparer as a senior citizen you should consider what type of tax business it is, such as how the work is performed.

Is the tax business a place where they meet with clients face to face and the client is allowed to sit and watch you do their taxes?

Or is the tax business a place where you rarely if at all see your clients and they just drop off their documents and leave?

This is something to consider depending on who you are as a person.

Some people don’t like the thought of someone staring at them while they are working on something, which in this case would be your client’s taxes, which

can make it even more stressful.

If clients are expecting a "Pronto" experience and you prefer to take your time, well then that's something to consider ahead of time in your choice of

employers.

Software

Another thing to consider when being a senior citizen wanting to become a tax preparer would be to be aware of the software used.

It is best to stay ahead of the game, meaning be prepared with knowing about how to use certain software before tax season.

Many seniors are technically savvy, this is not to say you're not.  But we all know that learning a new software "on the job" is not ideal.

Along with the software you should be confident in tax returns and your tax knowledge.

This is why Pronto Tax School offers practice tax returns to prepare you for moments like this.

If that interests you head over to prontotaxschool.com to check out our courses we offer which include full practice returns and even videos of the returns

being prepared.

Overcome challenges

If you are still considering becoming a tax preparer, but might have some of these issues just make sure you can overcome those challenges in time.

Keep in mind that most of the issues you'll face are not particular only to seniors but will be challenges for all new tax preparers.

Find the perfect fit for you, whether it is the style type of the tax business you might be working for or what material you will need to know, it is all about what

is right for you.
